We share the National Trust’s passion for open spaces, places, conservation and heritage.

As a trusted partner, we’ve been working together with the National Trust since 2005, helping them to define and tell their ‘spirit of place’ stories in authentic and surprising ways that fire the imagination and promote discovery, creativity and collaboration for all the family, whilst remaining true to the National Trust brand as a whole.

More than skin deep

Our work with the National Trust is all about getting under the skin of the destination, helping to convey the personality of the property, with designs that encourage audiences to be curious, explore, dig deeper and connect with its unique stories.

“The ideas which the Gendall team developed were creative and sympathetic to the spirit of the story we were telling. The quality of the finished product has been fantastic throughout and we’ve had an enthusiastic response from visitors”

Emily Blanshard
Operations Manager Stourhead & Mompesson

Garden interpretation

Lady Dorothy D’Oyly Carte of Coleton Fishacre in Devon would frequently use flowers from the extensive grounds to bring scent and colour into this exquisite country home. Our interpretation boards were designed to honour this tradition and be respectful of the environment, using recycled plywood in their construction.

The flower interpretations created for us by the team at Gendall have been widely admired by visitors, volunteers and colleagues across the Trust. Creative and informative, they are a wonderful addition to the garden.

Immersion and exploration

Spending time at an individual property is key for us to ensure that our work expresses what makes it a 'unique, distinctive and cherished' place. This is when our brains and sketch pads spring into life, exploring and developing surprising and engaging ways to tell past and future stories and immersive display information.

Connecting with people

Whether it is interpretation, outdoor advertising, children’s trails or welcome leaflets, we are always seeking to move, teach, and inspire the different National Trust audiences, connecting them with the individual history, culture and nature of a place.

Brand guardians

We are meticulous in our adherence to the National Trust brand identity and its application. It’s imperative we’re able to follow the coherent approach, tone of voice and guiding principals as set out in their brand guidelines, to ensure we convey their unique personality, character and attitude in the work we create.

Return on experience

The most satisfying element of any project with the National Trust is checking back in after a project has gone live and learning how our designs, installations and products have enabled visitors to have a deeper and more fulfilling experience with a property or garden. We seek feedback to apply to future designs and executions.
